Changes to your breasts during pregnancy is very natural and to be expected. As your body grows and prepares itself for delivery there will be some significant hormonal changes which are responsible for any breast fluctuations.
There are some very common changes to your breasts that you may notice during pregnancy, these include:
Beginning as early as 6 weeks, you may start to notice your breasts getting bigger. The size of your breasts will continue to increase throughout your pregnancy, with most women increasing a cup size or two.
During pregnancy many women find their breasts are unusually sensitive to the touch and can become quite sore. If this is the case for you, it is important to wear a comfortable and supportive maternity bra to ease any strain you may be experiencing.
Your nipples may experience several changes. Firstly they may become more pronounced, with the areolas and nipple size increasing. They may also become slightly darker in colour and during your last few months of pregnancy you can expect to start producing a special type of milk called colostrum. All of this is in preparation for baby’s arrival and breastfeeding.
During pregnancy many women will experience all three of these changes and some less common changes too. The level of change varies significantly from woman to woman, if however you do have concerns about the changes you are experiencing, simply talk to your midwife or current doctor.
