Having Twins or Triplets

  • Non Identical Twins are far more common than Identical Twins.
  • Twin births occur around every 100 pregnancies, although this rate is much higher with IVF and other fertility treatments.
  • Triplets only occur naturally in 1 in 8,000 pregnancies.
  • Pregnancies of Multiples carry greater risks than singleton pregnancies. This is due to 2 babies growing together.
The risk of pre-eclampsia is higher
The risk of haemorrhage in pregnancy is higher
The risk of prematurity is higher
  • You have the same pain relief options as singleton pregnancies
  • Although the risks of a Caesarean are higher with multiple pregnancies more than half of women with twins give birth vaginally.
  • Just like all pregnancies, you should rest as much as possible. Listen to your body
  • Exercise gently - swimming is a great option
  • Eat well, ensuring a balanced diet
  • With all pregnancies, keep an open mind around the birth – events may occur which are out of your control.
  • Get as much sleep as you can

Tips & Advice from Mums of Multiples

  • Some Mums of Multiples suggest putting the babies down to sleep at the same time, so you can rest or have some time to yourself, while others will suggest splitting it so you have quality time with each child.
  • Purchase a Feeding Journal, this will help you remember feed times, nappy changes and who went to sleep when.
  • Shop around for big items as many stores offer discounts for 2 or more items such as Cots etc.

Rest when you can.
Don't set your expectations too high, and be flexible, the washing will be there tomorrow!
Make dinner in the morning – like spaghetti bolognaise, make mince in the morning so you just have to put the pasta in before husband gets home and things like  cottage pie and try and prep your food.  Cut your veggies up and keep cut up in fridge until you need them
- Don’t think you can do everything you did before you had kids….. I use to have 4 goals everyday… – Have a shower, look after the kids, make dinner and one load of washing …. I would have my shower first thing in the morning (before my husband went to work) and make dinner or prep dinner in the morning and everything I got done extra was a bonus!!
- Accept help when offered and get your husband to help you where he can.
- Look after yourself and mental state… because if you don’t look after yourself then you can’t look after your family
- Organise and plan your day or week upfront, it will save you heaps of time that can rather be spent sleeping or resting.
